Thomas and Eileen are a married couple living in King, North Carolina. Thomas is a person whose glass is always half full, and always enters the library with a smile, a twinkle in his eye, and a cheerful hello. Eileen enjoys coming to the library to read the newspapers and magazines, borrow books, and use the public Internet computers.

Both unfortunately found themselves unemployed. Thomas and Eileen came to the library to use the Internet to search for jobs. The staff provided instruction which helped them to learn how to navagate the Internet, tips for using NCLive to search for employment, and assistance with using Microsoft Office to develop resumes.

They found that the library offered a series of “Job Skills” classes in their computer lab (Gentry Technology Center) with instructors provided by Forsyth Tech’s Stokes County Center. The classes provided six hours of instruction twice a week for a month. Classes included computer skills classes, assistance with creating or modifiy a successful resume, job searches, and assistance with applying online.

Eileen found a job. Eileen says “I love my library and it make me feel great, it is the place for me.” Thomas is more confident about the future and feels he has the tools he needs to find employment.

Libraries change lives!
