The residents of the Monarch Home, a group home for developmentally disabled adults, are loyal patrons and volunteers to the Pettigrew Regional Library.
In spite of their disabilities they possess skills and a willing spirit and they need a place in the community where they can make a positive contribution.
They come to the library twice a week to help us and are proud and happy to help keep the books on our shelves straight and dust-free.
The library has become an anchor institution for them, a place where they belong and a place they are part of. On March 7, our friends wrote, performed, and starred in a special presentation at the library for a National Awareness Day, SPREAD THE WORD TO END THE WORD, to replace the use of the word “retarded” with the term “intellectually disabled.” The crowd was such that, they had to add a second performance.
Libraries change lives!
The “library changes lives” theme works to “pay it forward.” Our Monarch Home friends’ performance for SPREAD THE WORD TO END THE WORD changed the lives of all those in attendance that day and each day that patrons see them working hard to keep the library looking beautiful.
